Remy crawls under Linguini’s chef’s hat and puppeteers him to great fame. He eventually teams up with Linguini, a hopeless line cook in desperate need of Remy’s direction. Worse still, whenever he enters a restaurant kitchen in his hometown of Paris, cooks leap onto their stations screaming “rat!” The culinary world seems utterly inaccessible to him simply because of his station in life. Remy the Rat is gifted with a perfect palette, but his family is content to nibble on garbage. “It was only as an adult when the story’s themes about creativity and collaboration really began to click for me.” “To be honest, when I saw it as a kid, I wasn’t a big fan,” says Jacobsen. “We just asked, ‘Do you have gray?’ ‘Do you have makeup so you can put whiskers on your face?’ ‘Can you make those mittens look like rat’s feet?’ The point was to really lean into the aesthetic of TikTok which is totally frenetic and DIY.”Īnd its themes have resonated specifically with the theater kid subsection of TikTok. Harris’ Tony-nominated Slave Play and the Jake Gyllenhaal starrer Sea Wall/A Life. “Our costume consultant, Tilly Grimes, looked through the actors’ closets over video chat,” says producer Greg Nobile, who produced Jeremy O. And with the holidays looming, Seaview couldn’t ship microphones, green screens or tiny rat ears to the cast in time to record their scenes. Musicals, even virtual ones, typically take months, if not years, to produce.
RATATOUILLE TIKTOK PROFESSIONAL
In early December, Seaview Productions announced that they would transform a viral TikTok phenomenon into Ratatouille: The TikTok Musical, a professional production featuring veteran performers like Wayne Brady and Tituss Burgess, in just under a month. The meme inspired beautifully orchestrated Ratatouille songs a plenty, as well as elaborate set designs and choreography.Ĭheck out a sampling of the saucy goods below. The chef’s hats were never going to arrive at the actors’ houses on time.

They say boredom is the mother of all invention (or some such thing), and with so many musical theater/Pixar fans sheltered in place, the meme soon took on all the depth, nuance, and flavor of Remy's famous ratatouille, the dish that even won the favor of bristly food critic Anton Ego. Granted, tracing the roots of a good meme isn't the easiest thing to do, but let's just say this one really took off when TikToker e_jaccs dropped the hot, Alvin and The Chipmunks-inspired jam, " Ode to Remy," complete with such catchy lyrics as "Remy the ratatouille/the rat of all my dreams/I praise you, my ratatouille/May the world remember your name."īut things really went viral when TikToker danieljmertzlufft gave the song some serious production value, while envisioning musical theater stage directions in the graphics, like "CONFETTI EVERYWHERE! LIGHTS GOING CRAZY! REMY ON A LIFT FLYING OVER THE AUDIENCE!!" And like most good entertainment these days, it all started with a meme. Per Deadline, Seaview, the Tony Award-winning Broadway production company behind such shows as Slave Play and the Jake Gyllenhaal-starring Sea Wall/A Life, announced yesterday a ticketed, digital stream of Ratatouille: The TikTok Musical as a benefit show for The Actors Fund, produced in association with TikTok and TodayTix Presents.

Ladies and gentleman, for your listening and viewing pleasure, this New Year's Day, Seaview presents Ratatouille: The TikTok Musical! But with the lights of Broadway currently out due to COVID, how could they give the fans that spicy musical they're obviously so hungry for? Of course, with such popularity, it was only a matter of time before some opportunistic producers pounced on the idea. Or at least that would seem to be the case based on the 141.3 million (and counting) views on TikTok's #ratatouillemusical hashtag. Some non-musical movies just beg for a musical remake, and if ever there was one of those, it's 2007's Ratatouille –– Pixar's beloved tale of Remy, the French rat who becomes a master chef with the help of his puppet human, Linguini.
